BlackburnElementary PEPSI REFRESH PROJECT PRESS RELEASE

Blackburn Elementary in running for $50,000 for K/1 Playground Equipment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Newton,NC/November 4, 2011

Catawba County Schools’ Blackburn Elementary is proud to announce that their Fit to Learn, Build a New K/1 Playground Project is in the running for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. The goal of this project if funded is to create a safe playground area for our 190 kindergarten and first graders. This would be done by replacing broken and limited structure with a safe structure that can accommodate more children, adding swings, educational equipment and a covered outdoor classroom area.

Blackburn Elementary’s PTO is asking the public to assist the project in winning by voting daily in November.

The current structure is limited and has suffered years of use by students, such as now having a cracked slide, peeling paint and not sufficiently serving the growing student population. If this idea is funded it will encourage outdoor fitness, learning and creative play for our youngest students. Each month Pepsi gives away thousands of dollars in grants to enrich communities and their needs.

“As a parent of a child, I know the importance of safe and adequate area outside that encourages fitness, learning and creativity. This new playground would offer our students and community those opportunities,” states Julie Young, PTO VP.  Pepsi rewards those projects in the $50,000 category with the most number of votes (the top ten at the end of the month will be rewarded $50,000). “We need your helping in making this project possible.”
